Plane trees shade Cours Mirabeau, where fountains mark the way between the old town and the Mazarin Quarter.
Estimated journey times
Begin at the Fontaine de la Rotonde, then follow the plane-tree-lined Cours Mirabeau, where fountains mark the route between the old town and Mazarin Quarter. At the upper end, the Fontaine du Roi René honours the 15th-century ruler and patron of the arts. Nearby, Saint-Sauveur Cathedral combines architectural layers from early Christian remains to Gothic additions.
The city preserves the childhood home of painter Paul Cézanne and connects to the landscapes he repeatedly painted. Visit Atelier Cézanne to see his working environment, then look toward Montagne Sainte-Victoire, whose changing light appears in many of his canvases. The Musée Granet adds a city-centre collection of painting and sculpture.
